Smaller competitor outranking you? Domain rating isn't why.

Why a one-person rival outranks a bigger brand: tighter intent match, cleaner internal linking, better schema. Here's how to close the gap.

Symptoms

If any of these sound familiar, this is your problem.

01

A solo operator with a one-page site beats your top service page

02

Their content is shorter, plainer and ranks anyway

03

You have more backlinks, more pages, less traffic

04

Their meta titles look "amateur" but the click-through rate is double yours

Why it happens

The root cause — in plain English.

Google rewards specificity, not size. A solo operator who niches down to "boiler installation in three postcodes" with a tight, fast-loading page beats a big brand whose nearest equivalent is "heating services" buried four clicks deep. Your bigger site dilutes its own authority across hundreds of pages; theirs concentrates everything on the one query that matters. They're not better at SEO — they're better at choosing.
How we diagnose it

The first three things we check.

We pull the top 10 ranking competitors for your top 20 commercial keywords and analyse three things only: title-tag pattern, on-page word count and number of internal links pointing at the ranking URL. The gap is always visible inside an hour. Then we cross-reference with your own log-file data to see whether Googlebot even reaches your equivalent pages often enough to value them. Half the time the issue is crawl frequency, not content quality.
The cost of waiting

Every quarter a tighter competitor sits above you, they bank backlinks and brand searches that compound the gap — six months of ignoring it is usually 18 months of catching up.

First action this week: Pick your single most profitable keyword, search it incognito, and read the top three results word-for-word. The pattern they share is your brief.
