Why it happens

The root cause — in plain English.

Three culprits in this order. One: page builders (Elementor, Divi, WPBakery) add 2-4MB of unused CSS and JS that loads on every page. Two: hero images shipped at 2400×1600 unoptimised, which alone tank Largest Contentful Paint. Three: third-party scripts — Hotjar, FB Pixel, GA, chat widget, cookie banner — each adding render-blocking time. Hosting matters last; speed problems are 80% front-end weight.
How we diagnose it

The first three things we check.

We run Lighthouse on the top five commercial pages and rank fixes by impact-vs-effort. The unblock list is almost always the same: convert hero images to AVIF/WebP at correct dimensions, defer third-party scripts to load on interaction, remove unused CSS via critical-path inlining, and switch the page builder layouts to native blocks where the page is fixed-template. We hit Core Web Vitals green inside 2-3 weeks without changing host.
